UAE Hosts First Session of Regional Association II Management Group’s Virtual Discussion Series
Represented by His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Executive Director of NCM and the President of Regional Association II (ASIA), the interactive session identified the regional status of the membership in the new WMO technical commissions and explored ways to pool the expert resources in the region. This will allow the association to expedite the implementation of WMO strategic plan 2020-23 in ASIA. Participants also discussed the working format and agenda of RA II’s forthcoming video conferences.
The decision to hold the virtual discussion series was initiated by His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Executive Director of NCM and the President of Regional Association II (ASIA), who suggested the activation of remote communication to accelerate the activities of Region II Asia in view of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis and the lockdown measures currently in force across the globe.
His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous said: “We are facing an unprecedented global health crisis in recent history at one end and at the same time, we must remain vigilant to the threats that meteorological and hydrological hazards such as floods, droughts, tropical cyclones and sand and dust storms can bring to our societies, particularly during a challenging time like this”.
Al Mandous added: “I register my deep appreciations for all of our members who are providing uninterrupted 24/7 meteorological observations, forecasting and warning services to governments, various stakeholders, press and electronic media and general public in this hour of need, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.”
The virtual session also reviewed the status of membership in technical commissions and expert nominations where Management Group members were invited to review the registration status of their membership in the Commission for Observation, Infrastructure and Information Systems (INFCOM) and the Commission for Weather, Climate, Water and Related Environmental Services and Applications (SERCOM). Management Group members were also updated on the status of RA II members’ nominations of other experts to the two technical commissions.
Furthermore, the President of RA II highlighted the outcomes of the meeting of joint selection committee on the chairs and vice-chairs of Standing Committees and Study Groups of INFCOM and SERCOM. Management Group members were invited to discuss the outcomes of the committee meeting to ensure the alignment and coordination of the work of RA II and technical commissions.
NCM is a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), its executive council, the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System, the Tropical Cyclone Committee for Indian Ocean, the Executive Office of the Council of Arab Ministers for Meteorology and Climate Affairs, the Permanent Arab Meteorological Organization, and the Regional Association II (RA II) ASIA of the WMO.
